RE: Crossing into the USA-What foods are forbidden

We crossed about a week ago and the only thing they asked about was firewood.

RE: Need new truck advice

Get the 4.10. It will tow better and you won't notice the difference in fuel mileage.

RE: FIFTH WHEEL QUALITY

Take a look at Glacier Bay fifth wheels. They have a unit that size. We have had one for about a year and are happy with our purchase.

RE: Travel Trailer vs Fifth Wheel

We get slightly better mileage pulling a 29' 10,000 lb. fifth wheel than we did pulling a 26' 7,000 lb. travel trailer with the same truck. You may not gain anything.

RE: Changing Oil

I am a retired truck mechanic and run synthetic in everything I own. If you extend your oil change interval, I don't feel it's any more expensive. IMHO

RE: LED tail lamps and side markers

I replaced the tail/stop lights for safety. They are instantly on and brighter than the cheap lights which are standard on most trailers.

RE: TT w/ Pickup Truck..open box vs. tonneau vs. cap(topper)

I have added caps to 2 trucks and did not notice any difference in fuel mileage. Maybe any improvement in aerodynamics is offset by additional weight.

RE: Things to do in Holland, MI area

Spend a day at the beach at Holland State Park. In Holland I would pick Windmill Island. There is also the Holland Museum. Meijer Gardens and the Air Zoo are great but not in Holland.

RE: Is 12v Voltage Drop From Load Less If More Batteries?

It depends on what's causing the voltage drop. If the wire size is the cause then your initial drop would be the same but it would take twice as long for the batteries to go dead. if the batteries are the cause then your initial drop will be less. In either case your batteries will last twice as long.

RE: Boiling and Smoking Battery

I agree that the battery is junk now. After replacing it and repairing any damaged wiring make sure your converter does not charge more than 14.5 volts.

RE: Will a 6.0 gas or V-10 gas tow 12k pounds?

I tow a 10,500 lb. (fully loaded) 29' fifth wheel with a 06 Chev. 2500HD with a 6 liter gas and the 4.10 gear. I get 13-15 mpg with the empty truck and 9 mpg towing. I'm not the first one up the hill but I keep up with most heavy trucks on grades and am satisfied with the performance.

RE: Sewer dump question

I added a 3rd valve near the cap and use that method at times if I don't have access to water to flush the black tank. The added advantage to a 3rd valve is if one of your primary valves leaks, you won't have a surprise when you remove the cap.

RE: Small high-end fifth-wheel??

Take a look at the Glacier Bay line. We have their 29' 225 model. I think you would be happy with the quality.

RE: Anybody change to Synthetic Oil

I run synthetics in everything I own including lawn mowers and 2-cycle outboards. If you extend your oil change interval @50% there will not be an increased cost. I have noticed improvements with synthetics but not a noticeable improvement in mileage.

RE: Gas or diesel in 2008?

I choose gas because of the unknown reliability of the new generation of diesels and ultra low sulfur fuel. I think your fuel cost per mile will be about the same either way.

RE: How do you store your sewer hose ?

Our trailer had the caps riveted in also. I removed the rivets and had to drill the holes in the top and bottom of the bumper for the caps to lock in place. That's where we store the hose now.

RE: ??'s for you 5er's

My experience going from a TT to a 5th wheel is great. I thought our TT towed fine, but the 5th wheel is much better.

We bought a Glacier Bay last spring and have lived in it about 4 months at this point. We are happy with the purchase and would recommend them.
